The Giving Tree Benefit - Participating stores and information

Hallo everyone,

we at HANAU are proud to participate in the Giving Tree Benefit to help our dear friend SashaKitteh Wildrose and her family.

We teamed up with some fellow designers and creators in Second Life and each of us offers a product you can purchase and help us donate. Here some general information written up by Emmins13 Sygall, owner of [QE] Designs:

At any time of year there are individuals and families in need, but especially during the holidays. To remind us of this, when I was a kid, my mom would take us to a store that had a Giving Tree a few wks before Christmas. On the tree were tags and the tags had information (how many kids, their sizes, what clothing they needed and toys they liked that sort of thing) on a nearby family. She'd have us pick one and we'd go shopping for whatever was listed on the tags. I will always be thankful to her for doing that, especially considering we lived pay check to pay check ourselves most of the time. It showed me that no matter how badly you think YOU have it, there is someone who far worse off than you are and we all could use that reminder now and again ;)

I continued the tradition until the stores just stopped doing it. I'm not sure why but in looking around at some of the social media posts and news articles on the internet I can see an ugly pattern of a loss of empathy and I'm sure that had something to do with it. Whenever you hear of someone asking for help the next thing you hear are the oh so charitable folks screaming how they 'had to work hard and so should everyone else' or 'get off their ass and do something about it themselves'. The thing that people don't often realize is asking for help is a LAST resort for most, why do the masses so quickly assume that the person is a deadbeat.. why not help out of the goodness of YOUR heart and not worry about the why's or how's.

The way I see it is that it can NEVER hurt you to help someone else, if it is in your power to do so. If the other party is a fraud or doesn't follow through then that is on THEM. I know I'm not alone in feeling this way so, this year, I resolved to revive the Giving Tree here in SL in some form and it just so happened fate tossed a family right in my lap. I've known Sasha for a while, she blogs for my store, and I know she's a very kind, sweet person with two awesome kids and a wonderful husband. They've run into some hard times this holiday and a few of us have gotten together to do what we can to help.

Anywhere you see this vendor, all proceeds of the item inside will go to help Sasha's family. Thanks to those that purchase these items, her kids (and cat ;p) will have an awesome Christmas and will be able to get through the next few weeks. Sadly, they are not alone, far too many people are in dire straits this time of year. Please keep them, along with all the other individuals and families in need this holiday season in your thoughts and prayers.

Every little bit counts and if you're interested in doing more in your area here are a few links to some awesome charities doing what they can too..

And here the family's story in their own words:

My name is James, going by Graenor Silvercloud in Second Life

I was fired on November 12th after working with the company for just shy of 4 years, and reaching the highest front-line position within the company.

Beginning in early September I have been experiencing severe abdominal pains seemingly at random times throughout the day. Severe enough to send me to the Emergency Room on multiple occasions. I accumulated almost 46 days of absences due to these pains over a three month period.

I have had multiple scans and procedures performed on me to attempt to find the cause of these pains, including 6 separate CT scans, 5 X-Rays, 4 Sonograms, a HIDA scan as well as an Endoscopy, and a Colonoscopy.

All of the scans and procedures seemed to come back with little to no evidence of anything wrong, save one thing that WAS found was that I had at least one kidney stone on my right side, with possible formation of another on my left.

After all the scans and other procedures, I had a Shock Wave Lithotripsy, which is a minor surgery, performed to deal with the kidney stone.

The procedure did take care of the stone, however the severe pains did not go away, they only seemed to intensify if anything, and I continued to miss work due to the crippling nature of the pains.

Unfortunately for myself and my family, I was unable to complete the FMLA paperwork in a timely manor and the claim was denied, triggering my firing from my job, and leaving us devastated.

This has left my family and myself without any income, and we had barely been scrapping by with the pay that had been coming in. We are reaching out for any assistance that you might be willing to offer so that we might make it through this next month.

On top of all the continuing pains, my Insurance did not and will not cover the majority of the costs for these ER visits and procedures, leaving me with nearly $18,000 in doctors and hospital bills.

I am ashamed that I am not able to provide for my family during the holidays. Luckily I have been able to find a new job, but do not start until the end of the month, and as such will not have any income throughout December.

Anything that might help us through this trying time would be greatly appreciated, even if it is simply good thoughts and prayers.

Thank you one and all,
Graenor Silvercloud (James), SashaKitteh Wildrose (Liz) and family.
